September 2010 is “Pet Smile Month”

by admin on September 3rd, 2010

Category: News, Special Offers, Tags:

Pet Smile Month september 2010During September 2010 Fitzalan House is participating in National Pet Smile Month. Owners are invited to receive a complimentary “Pet Smile Check-Up” – a free check on their pet’s oral health. In addition they can also receive a Goody Bag containing samples of special dental diets and chews which are proven to reduce the amount of dog’s dental disease.

Vets are very worried about the state of pets’ teeth in the UK. It is estimated that 80% of dogs and cats over the age of three urgently need dental treatment. Many loving pet owners do not realise the extent of their pet’s disease and are unaware of the importance of tooth brushing, daily oral hygiene chews and the special dental diets, which can help avoid the problems.

Dental disease is a welfare issue. “Dog’s breath” is the very least of the worries. Oral pain is a feature – but often goes unnoticed because pets carry on eating. As periodontal disease progresses, bacteria spreads from the mouth through the blood stream to affect other organs such as the kidneys and heart valves. In addition little showers of bacteria are carried into the lungs with every breath.

Dental disease is rightly regarded as a whole body problem and one that needs more attention. To highlight this very serious issue we are donating our time to examine pets’ mouths free of charge during September. There will also be demonstrations of tooth brushing and the use of oral chews and special diets.

Please telephone us on 01903-713806 to arrange a Pet Smile Check-Up at your earliest convenience.

Vaccine Amnesty

Calling all pets who have missed their boosters

You can come out now!

Protect your pet! In 2009, only half of the UK dog and cat population were fully protected against infectious diseases. Was your pet one of them?

If it has been over 12 months since you last visited us, then your pet could be at risk of contracting nasty and potentially fatal infections such as parvovirus, leptospirosis or cat ’flu. Unfortunately, immunity to these diseases does not last a lifetime and will gradually wane, leaving your pet at increased risk of disease. To ensure continued protection, you need to make sure that they are regularly ‘boosted’ against these diseases.

Our practice has launched a new scheme to help you ensure that your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date. If your pet’s last vaccination was more than 18 months ago, a restart consisting of a full course of two vaccinations will be necessary to maintain protection. We’re offering owners the opportunity of having a full vaccination course for the price of a booster, saving up to £11. In addition, this visit will also enable us to give your pet a full lifestyle health check and identify any other potential health problems at an early stage. Remember, prevention is always better than cure!

To participate, simply ring your local branch or contact the main surgery on 01903-713806 to book an appointment and enrol your pet in the scheme, which will be running until 31st July 2010. Just one phone call to find out more could ensure your pet stays healthy!

Half Price Microchips June 2010

by admin on June 16th, 2010

Category: Special Offers, Tags:

Lost Pets…

We fully appreciate the distress you feel if your beloved pet goes missing. That’s why we are encouraging you to take advantage of the only proven system that will ensure you and your pet are re-united as speedily as possible, by making this excellent value procedure even more affordable. For peace of mind call the surgery today and book an appointment for microchipping at the special price of £9.99. Offer available during June 2010 only.

What Is A Microchip?
A Microchip is an electromagnetic coil in a capsule the size of a grain of rice (see picture below comparing the two). Once inserted into your pet, it provides an inexpensive but permanent means of identification throughout the life of your pet.

The microchip is inserted into the scruff of the pets neck in a quick and painless manner. Each one has it’s own unique identification number. Once implanted the microchip remains electronically inactive until scanned by a special microchip scanner.

The Microchip responds to a low voltage electronic signal from a scanner and transmits its unique code, which is then displayed. This then allows Vets, Pet Rescue Staff, Dog Wardens and the Police to then access a database to discover the identity of the pet and its owner.

Microchipping was introduced to the UK in 1989 and there are now several million pets with a microchip. It is unique in that it has a patented anti-migration cap which ensures that the microchip cannot move around the body of the pet.
A Microchip is suitable for all pets and is acknowledged to be the most acceptable form of permanent identification available for companion animals. It is permanent, tamperproof, reliable and painless.

Should your pet go missing we recommend you take the following steps:

  • First phone 0870 6066 751 and report your missing pet.
  • Check with neighbours to make sure your pet is not with them or hiding in a shed, garage or similar.
  • Advise your own vet, plus all local rescue centres and charities.
  • Put up simple signs around your locality asking for help in locating your lost pet.

Neutering Offer – 20% Discount – March 2010

by admin on February 22nd, 2010

Category: Special Offers, Tags:

All owners are welcome to bring their pets in to the surgery for a free pre-operative check-up to ensure they are in sufficiently good health for neutering to be undertaken. Neutering carried out during March 2010 will receive a 20% discount off the normal procedure price (excludes buster collars and additional medications such as antibiotics and painkillers, and does not apply to emergency weekend or out-of-hours neutering).

Examples of fees are given below and estimates will be given on request.

Vets are very worried about the growing number of unwanted pets being rescued by local charities such as WADARS and nationally by charities such as the RSPCA.  Neutering has a dramatic impact on the national numbers of strays and unwanted pregnancies, especially in cats whose owners may have no wish to breed from their pet.

Additionally neutering can have other significant benefits.  In male cats and dogs it will mean no possibility of testicular tumours and a greatly reduced incidence of prostatic disorders.  Behaviourally there may be other significant benefits both in terms of temperament and a reduced tendency to vagrancy and aggression.  In females womb infections and ovarian cysts/tumours will no longer be a worry as your pet gets older and the incidence of mammary tumours is greatly reduced as well.  In bitches spaying eliminates the messiness of coming in to season and the need to control unwanted male advances.

The normal charges before discount is applied are:

CATS Castration £44.99
Spay £54.99
DOGS Castration Ranges from £99.99   (0-10kg)
£112.99  (30-40kg)
To £122.99  (50+kg)
Spay Ranges from £125.99  (0-10kg)
£142.99  (30-40kg)
To £189.99  (55+kg)

Voucher required – please ask at reception for one or

Please note that free dental checkups only include advice on dental matters. If advice is required on other issues a consultation fee will be charged.

Autumn Worm & Flea product Promotion 2009

by admin on October 5th, 2009

Category: Special Offers, Tags:

flea1Stamp out flea problems……It might be cold outside but your warm home makes an ideal breeding ground for fleas – the risk to your pet never goes away. That’s why it’s so important to keep up regular treatment, whatever the time of year.

Nature has given worms many ways of surviving and multiplying, many of them almost unbelievably complicated. But however improbable these strategies may seem, they are highly successful – so successful, in fact, that it is safe to say that a dog which is never treated is virtually certain to be infected with worms at some time in its life.

The British Small Animal Veterinary Association recommends worming all dogs and cats at least every 3 months. Take advantage of our Offer to buy a year’s supply of any wormer for your pet and you will receive a 25% Discount – 4 doses for the price of 3!

Offer applies until 31st November 2009 on production of a printed copy of this page.
