Sid, a cheeky terrier, loved his daily walks on the beach. He would gather stones and retrieve those that his owner threw for him. Unfortunately without his owner being aware he inadvertently swallowed one. When he began to vomit regularly a radiograph showed a pebble to be lodged in his small intestine. Surgical removal restored him to his usual bouncy self but only after a week’s stay in our hospital. Never again his owner says.

Mungo, an Italian Spinone, has suffered from idiopathic epilepsy since an early age. After an initially promising response to medication the frequency of his seizures began to increase prompting us to refer him for an MRI brain scan. Thankfully this did not show any sinister changes and he responded well to an increase in his phenobarbitone dosage and the addition of daily propentofyllin.

Hector a five year old Gordon Setter started to lose hair especially around the face and feet. He was diagnosed as having adult-onset demodicosis which is caused by the demodex mite. This in turn led to secondary skin infections. Hector was also found to have an underactive thyroid which would have contributed to this condition. Appropriate thyroid medication as well as antibiotics and many weekly baths with the awful-smelling drug amitraz have restored him to his former lustrous self!

Over many months the benign tumour on the underside of Wolfie’s chest grew to quite a size. Early on a fine needle aspirate had confirmed that this was a benign lipoma but because Wolfie, a Belgian Shepherd dog, was 11 years of age it was hoped that the growth would stabilise and surgery could be avoided. When the mass began to interfere with Wolfie’s comfort when lying down, surgery became necessary. As the surgical wound was large and in need of protection from the ground when he lay down, Wolfie was re-bandaged frequently and wore t-shirts for protection. Healing took almost six weeks but now he is fighting fit once more.

When O’riley, a three year old Flat-Coated Retriever, first suffered from severe vomiting and abdominal pain initial investigations were unrevealing. He would settle after a period of medication and return to normal for a few days but then the symptoms would again return. Blood samples, radiographs and ultrasonography would not identify the source of his trouble. Finally O’riley underwent endoscopy in which a fibre-optic tube is passed down into the stomach, under general anaesthesia, and beyond to take tissue samples and visualise the gastrointestinal lining. Inflammatory bowel disease was diagnosed and we are delighted to say that O’riley is responding well to treatment.

Hadley is a lovely dog to meet but he has always been very difficult when it comes to his owner leaving him at home. He suffers from severe separation anxiety causing him to damage furniture and decorations in his home, and get in quite a stew. A ‘cheeky chap’, as his owner calls him, Hadley has needed a finely tuned behavioural programme to help overcome his phobia which we are pleased to say is now well under control.

Ruby the Griffon is now right as rain after developing a severe corneal ulcer. She made little progress on antibiotic eye drops and the ulcer had to be debrided under local anaesthesia on three separate occasions before it started to settle. She has been a smashing patient and her eye looks to be making a full recovery.

Fizzy has had a very tough year. He has suffered from chronic rhinitis for a very long time and his nasal problems have required steroids in order to alleviate the symptoms. This month Fizzy has developed diabetes and pancreatitis, which has made him very poorly and necessitated hospitalisation. He has started to respond to therapy and is making good progress. He has been a delightful cat to look after.

Sam was found abandoned on a Littlehampton doorstep. A vivacious and delightful kitten, he was in very poor condition, covered in fleas and had bad diarrhoea.
We are extremely pleased to say that he is on the mend and will have no trouble in attracting a suitable and loving owner.

You may be thinking that I have already been a visitor to these pages and you would be right! My left anterior cruciate ligament was repaired at the surgery in August, and although I made a good recovery the strain on my opposite hind leg during the period that my left leg was too weak to support weight led to a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament on that leg too.
Now I have two shaved hind legs! Things are going well however and I have started to be able to enjoy short walks again thanks to the skills of Fitzalan vet Alison.
